Mahatma Showroom

“A space for artists with a great soul”

Mahatma Showroom is a cultural, creative, open and participatory space.

A contemporary place to enjoy the arts in their many forms, offering visitors the chance to develop their own abilities through creative, collaborative experiences.

With architecture as its thread — the calling and the seed of the project — it weaves a multidisciplinary network where experiences and the arts hybridise. Its founders live in the old town and are neighbours, shopkeepers and architects all in one.

After a period in which it was also an art gallery, it now focuses on two core activities:

  • Architecture and creativity workshops for small children, teenagers and adults.
  • Sales of toys connected to art, science and architecture, on four principles: non-violent, non-sexist, educational and ecological.

It also stocks a wide variety of board games for all ages. Digital technology, by contrast, has no place here. There are over 1,000 lines from specialist international brands. And their own toy brand, MAHATMA PLAY, is coming soon — it will surprise you…

But Mahatma is much more than that. This is where the neighbourhood and old town residents’ associations meet and debate, where cultural events of all kinds are held, and where cultural creation is nurtured from the ground up. It is an active part of the regeneration of the street and its surroundings, in a part of central Málaga that a few years ago was very run down and abandoned and that is now recovering its charm and its identity.

Its location at Calle Andrés Pérez 12 puts it on the line between the Picasso Museum and the Wine Museum, by way of the area around the Thyssen, complementing and enriching this cultural route through the city centre.
