El Neotaller

“El Neotaller” is a project designed and run by nine local artists: Encina, Ana G. Perales, Ana Cantos, Salvador Morales, José Luís Villén, Pepe Dávila, Juan Mejías Barrera, Fernando Nieto and Fernando Robles.

Right in the centre of Málaga, in a listed early twentieth-century regionalist building, we are a space for making work that includes a free-standing art gallery at street level and a studio–art store on the lower floor with two etching presses for printing, engraving and screen printing, a drying rack, an analogue photographic darkroom and a classroom.

We started out seven years ago in two small rooms in the studio of the artist Rafael Alvarado, and over these years we have shaped the current project. Well-known artists — besides Alvarado himself, figures such as Chema Lumbreras, Robert Harding, Fernando de la Rosa, Andrew Birch, Pedro Casermeyro and Juan Mejías Barrera — have shown in our space in exhibitions shared with our own team. In the last two editions we invited Pablo Mercado and Charo Carrera to intervene in a specific part of the workshop. In the same way, the performer Pabblo Solo has opened the last two exhibitions with actions in our light well.

Set up as a cultural association, we work above all on limited editions in a coworking arrangement, around a technique or a concept that brings our different languages together. As a learning community, intellectual, artistic and emotional enrichment are our team’s main aims in the studio, where we also propose a number of teaching activities.

We hold an art gallery licence, for which we design an annual programme built around several lines of exhibition work.
