APERTURA is a Centre for Photography and Visual Arts committed to outreach, experiment and training, opening our doors to other artistic disciplines that enrich the photographic act.

We have a 500-square-metre venue in the old town of Málaga given over entirely to sharing photography.

Through our two exhibition rooms we live and share our passion for photography: Sala Desenfocada is where we show significant work by Spanish photographers, while Espacio APERTURA shows student projects born within the school itself.

In the last year alone, the walls of Sala Desenfocada have carried work by Bernard Plossu, Juan Valbuena, Ricky Dávila, Mar Sáez, Toni Amengual and Pepa Babot, among others, as well as an exhibition made specially by Carlos Canal for the 2nd Japanese Cultural Week in Málaga, and the show “Esto no es una exposición de mujeres”, with a selection of works by women photographers from the APERTURA Collection.

On the outreach side we run free photographic activities such as talks, debates open to the public, screenings, photographic gatherings and book launches.

We are proud of the APERTURA Collection, which already brings together more than 180 works by Spanish photographers, both established and new, and which keeps growing as one sign of our collector’s DNA.

And of the APERTURA library, which grows every week and already holds more than 500 specialist books, freely available to our students and friends.

Our publishing arm also brings out the annual magazine APERTURA and is behind the Photographica book series and a range of fanzines.

We have just turned 25, and more than 6,000 students have passed through our classrooms; thanks to them we have become a national and international reference point for learning photography.
